Academy Gallery Nuremberg

“In Darkness let me dwell” is a horror musical and an installation performance, centred around the split second before a doomed queen is fated to lose her head. The performance arranges itself around this imminent act of violence, played out both by and onto the state, like chess pieces in a deterministic game with ambiguous morals. Motivated by a common goal of inventing witchcraft and therefore defeating the sun, all will inevitably succumb to the darkness. Funeral doom, renaissance lute music, and drone music drive the players in and out of time, and the interplay of video and live performance pulls them in-between life and death. Failure is certain but there is a kind of emancipation in being freed of the head, in finding a state of headlessness, or: the devil is a great escape artist but sometimes even them need our help.
Caroline Beach is a choreographer, performer, dancer, musician and a creative “nonsense person”. Her work spans a variety of spaces and contexts. It is interdisciplinary but deeply rooted in the lived experiences of the body. She engages in process-based works that address the complex relationships between humans and non-humans, the mathematical logic of the absurd, and the deep empathy that can be discovered in rituals of failure. She was born in Texas (USA) and now lives in Dresden and Berlin.

The Open Call of Musik Installationen Nürnberg is produced in cooperation with LEONARDO – Center for Creativity and Innovation.
